Effect on EU immigrants following a change of government

Post by UK_BR5 » Thu Jun 04, 2009 9:21 pm

in the light of the political changes taking place now and the gloomy future that might be waiting for the labour party, what would be the conservative's policy on EU immigrants if they will win the next general election ? do they have any plans to quit EU membership like UKIP ? will they impose immigration rules for EU families living according to the 2004 directive ?

Even if the Tories decide to leave the EU it's not going to happen straightaway so no point worrying about it. They also can't impose restrictions on EU immigrants unless they negotiate an opt out for it, which also will take time.

The big restrictions will come on the non-EU immigrants, and that will start to come into play before labour get well and truly stuffed in the general election.

As the others have already said, their aim isn't for us to leave the EU. The only parties who would do that are UKIP and the BNP, neither of which will get anywhere close to winning a general election.

EU issues are much broader than just immigration, at the mention of EU, the ordinary citizen will only relate it to immigration because that's what them politicians and the media want people to understand. Its unfortunate that citizens have not been shown any benefit of belonging to EU, other than EU immigration and social policy disadvantages.
