If application is turned down....

Hey all,

I was offered a job where the employer is willing to sponsor me. I am currently on student entry clearance, but in order to apply for the Tier 2 visa, I will have to return home (US) to apply. This will happen during my time still as a student (writing up my dissertation). The reason I have to return home is because I will not have my final award from a UK institution before I start so I need to apply with my US undergraduate qualification.

My question is, if I return home, apply, and the application is not successful for some reason....does my student entry clearance remain valid, so I can return back here and finish my course? And can I reapply for the post-study visa months later when I am eligible for it?
