british child nationalty

hi guy i just need some clarification with an issue been discused with a pal
the question is if a father is a naturalised british and the wife is not and they had a child that was born in united states would the child have automatic british citizenship as a result of the father or does the child has to qualify

Child would normally be British by descent.

Is this a child already born, a future child, or just hypothetical?
