Can I apply for extention before 1 month of visa expire

Can I apply for extention before 1 month of visa expire

My HSMP visa is expiring on 23 august 2009 I want to apply early for my extention under Tier 1 General because if by any chance I got rejection I can still have time to re apply. But someone told me that I can only apply for extension just 1 month before my visa expiring,

So can I apply more than 1 month before my visa expiring like 10 July 2009

Ofcourse you can apply in advance but if you are planning to apply in person, the time you get your appointment, it will anyway be a month before your visa expiry date.
