Referee - Relative

Post by iceman010899 » Sat Jul 11, 2009 6:04 pm

Hello,

What counts as a relative ? Is it blood relative or any family link ?

Does your parent's second cousin's husband count as relative for referee purposes ?

Thanks.

Refrees should not be related to you by either birth or marriage.

That's true, but this relationship would be considered extremely distant in the UK— a parent's second cousin's husband — so much so that, in practical terms, many people would be only dimly aware, if aware at all, that such a person was related to them, insofar as many people don't know their second cousins at all, never mind their second cousins once removed, even less the husbands and wives of those people.

If you know this man primarily through other means than his being your parent's relation, then it would probably be OK. However, if you are acquainted with him primarily because of the family connection, then he shouldn't be a referee. And to be completely safe, it would be be better to use someone else.

So, Would it be wrong to use a professional refree who is a family friend (not related in anyway) known through my British Wife?

Family friends should be ok. I had family friends sign my naturalization application and myself have signed for my friends and family friends.
