Apply for Tier 1 when holding the dependent visa?

Hi friends,
Can I apply for Tier 1 (General) from outside UK when I already hold the dependent visa as a spouse of a student? Just to mention, I have dependent visa but have not travelled to UK even once. In this case,

If Tier 1 (General) is approved, how easy it is to change it from dependent to Tier 1 visa? Can I apply for Tier 1 immediately after approval?

If Tier 1 visa is rejected, will my existing dependent visa be valid and can I travel to UK with this dependent visa? Can the rejection of Tier 1 bring any problem in the border entry at UK like extra questioning etc?

You apply from dependent visa to Tier-1 from outside the UK. If you Tier-1 visa application is rejected it will not affect your dependent status. But once you get Tier-1 stamped on your passport you will loose your dependent status.
