Registering child as British

Post by minny » Sun Aug 02, 2009 8:56 am

Got ILR at last. Now submitted MN1 form for child born in the UK. Can anyone explain how to apply for a child's first british passport. The IPS website is not very clear as there is no mention of submitting child's BC registration certificate along with the application form.

Should I take the passport application to NCS again and do I have to include my passport with the application?

Copied from IPS web site

"First child passport - supporting documents you will need to provide

IPS needs to see original documents that prove your child is British. IPS does not accept photocopies of documents or documents that have been laminated, but will accept documents that are laminated for Braille labelling.

A birth certificate is not considered absolute proof of identity. Even if your child was born in the UK, IPS may ask to see further documents.
The documents IPS needs to see depend on where your child was born.
If you are still not sure what you need to send after reading the details below, you can call the IPS Passport Adviceline 0300 222 0000.

If the child was born or adopted in the UK

IPS needs to see the child's full birth or adoption certificate showing parents' details and one of the following:

the mother's UK birth certificate, or her Home Office certificate of registration or naturalisation, or her passport that was valid at the time of the child's birth

the father's UK birth certificate, or his Home Office certificate of registration or naturalisation, or his passport that was valid at the time of the child's birth* and the parents' marriage certificate

Note*: if the passport expired before the child's birth, you need to send the passport on which the father entered the UK."

Thanks

Wait until the child is British before you think about a passport.

You need to submit the registration certificate (when you receive it) and the child's full UK birth certificate, if the child already has a passport from another country they may want to see that as well. The parents passports with ILR are only relevant to children who were British at birth and would not have a registration certificate. You can get the forms from any post office that offers the check and send service (or call the number you were given and ask them to send you one). You can submit the form using Post Office check and send or you can call the IPS number and get an appointment for the seven day fast track service, with the fast track service you get the new passport within seven days or less.

As always, one useful reply and another 'not so useful' one!

Thanks OFCHARITY.

I used the following link to request the passport application forms for all the applicants:

https://passports.ips.gov.uk/forms/appl ... -form.aspx

Got them in 3 days along with the guidance notes telling you the documents you need to provide in support of the application.

you can also get them from most post offices. you have to ask at the counters though and they will hand them to you no questions asked
