My husband did exactly that. He studied on an ESOL Citizens Course which was proving to be such a slow process (some courses progress quicker than others), he sat the Life in the UK test....failed it the first time, and passed on his second attempt, 2 weeks later. He submitted the Life certificate for ILR. Taking the test, even if your husband fails, won't affect the ESOL qualification.
One tip...your husband can choose to listen to the questions in the Life test with headphones, at the same time as reading from the screen.
