Do they do medical checks in South Africa

Post by junai » Wed Aug 26, 2009 2:56 pm

Do they do medical checks in South Africa for spouse's visa? If they do what do they check for? Is it just TB or do they also check for HIV?

See this information on the countries whose citizens they do TB health checks for.

South Africa is not one of them at present.

TB is a Airborne contagious disease, whiles HIV is not.

Would they have to declare that they have HIV when they were entering the country?

I see no reason, why they should have to disclose any information to anyone other than a sexual partner or someone they are about to enter into sexual intercourse with, who they are oblige to tell by law.

A country can ask for those information from a public health (financial implication aspect), but not for anything else, and it should not form a basis for refusal.

Thanks for your reply Obie. I thought that was the case. Does anyone know whether they still do a TB check on entry for those countries where they don't conduct a medical in advance?

When my fiance first came here on a WHV they were going to do a chest X-ray when she arrived at Heathrow but it meant she would have missed her connection to Manchester and so the nurse just took her address and about 3 months later the hospital wrote and said she had to attend for the x-ray (which she did - all clear).
