Muslim Marriage Certificate

Post by amreenmalik » Tue Sep 29, 2009 11:05 am

Hi,
I have included my wife's name in my passport as my spouse when I renewed mine.
I am planning to include my surname in my wife's passport. We have a marriage certificate issued by the mosque at which we got married in India and a translated copy of that in English by notary public. That certificate was used for her to get Entry Clearance as my dependant as well.
Is that enough to show as proof to the Indian Embassy in London as our marriage certificate or will they ask for something else.

Could somebody please advice.
Thanks.

amreenmalik, the question here is, as regards the marriage in the Mosque in India, under the laws of India, is that recognised as a legal marriage in India, or "just" a religious marriage?

The fact that the BHC in India accepted the marriage certificate is a good sign, given that under the terms of the UK's Foreign Marriages Act 1892, the UK recognises as legally valid any marriage conducted overseas that it considered to be a legal marriage under the laws of the place where it took place.

For this reason, British Missions around the world tend to have a good understanding of the marriage laws of the country in which they are situated, hence me saying it is a good sign that the BHC accepted the Mosque-issued marriage certificate.

Anyone with knowledge of Indian marriage law ..... please post!
John

I agree with John's comments. If its good enough for the BHC in India, it shoudl be good enought the IHC in London

Yes that should be more than enough. I used the same successfully, for my previous applications and other places whenever I needed it.
