Applying for newTier1 visa without losing the existing Tier2

I'm working for an Insurance company in UK since last 2 years and I'm already having a Tier 2 visa which is valid till Oct 2011.
But my current job will be over in 6 months time.

Can I apply for a Tier 1 visa separately from UK or India.
If yes then will my existing Tier 2 and the associated job stand cancelled?
Or Do I have to wait till my job/onsite tenure finishes or till my visa gets expired?

If you apply for Tier 1 visa and get it, it will override the Tier 2 visa.

Yes you can apply if you have enough points and qualify.. chekc the PBS Calculator

You can stil continue in ur present job with tier1(g) visa and with tier1 visa you have the freedom to switch n job btw jobs as u get opportunity unlike sticking to only 1job with tier2 visa..

No you dont need to as explained in point2..

Does the Home office treats them separately.

So I can continue working for the same company but with a different visa status right ?
