Can Cuban work in the UK?

Post by confused.com1984 » Tue Oct 13, 2009 8:38 pm

I have a close friend living in Cuba who is looking to visit the UK to work for under 6 months. He has no problem getting an exit visa his end. Does anyone know if it is now possible to enter the UK to work, his is a professional dancer but is looking to do any sort of work in the UK.

Not without a work visa no. He can't work on a visitor visa.

Not as a professional dancer unless he's part of a show/professional dancegroup.

Yes this is what i thought.I have been looking at the new tier system and all that and it appears to be impossible to do temp work. He was not necessarily looking to dance here just do any type of temp work as he wanted to visit the uk but wanted to work whilst here so he did not have to sit around bored whilst we were all at work.

No work for him and if immigration suspect him of wanting to work here on his visitor's visa then they can refuse him entry and send him back to Cuba.

He is in Portugal legally or illegally as it wasn't clear on your previous post?

And no, he still can't work in the UK on that basis as you're not settled in the UK.

What is the basis for his stay in Portugal - união de facto?

Yes, in this case he will be able to get dependant visa.

You have to be in a bona fide civil partnership. You do realise that a civil partnership is for a couple of the same sex yes?

What visa does he have in Portugal?

In Portugal civil partnership is possible for opposite-sex couples too.

In which case you've got no chance unless he somehow gets a work permit.

that is my question... if we go both together to uk, and he gets a job, its easy for him, or he gets automatically a work permiss?

He can't work in the UK as has been said on this thread previously. His work permit is for Portugal, that doesn't entitle him to work in the UK. The UK isn't part of Schengen either so he would need a visa just to enter the UK. If they think that he is going to work in the UK, as he clearly intends to, then a visa won't be granted.

Surely though if the OP was settled in the UK (or at least had a job offer in the UK), he could apply for a visa as a proposed civil partner. Then once they registered their civil partnership in the UK (assuming that is what they wanted to do..) he could extend his visa, and then work?
