Have a look at this

http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/benefits/ni_number.asp

It should address all the questions you have on National Insurance.

hi rao,
as per my personal exp. Jobcentreplus takes min 3 weeks to arrange an interview for NI number and they might require confirmed interview letter or appointment letter when you meet them.

No, that would be the form P46, more to do with income tax rather the national insurance contributions.

Quite normal (for someone who can't hand in a form P45 from their previous UK employer).

Hi Guys,
I did sign on P46 form before I got my first salary.
For NI number, I ring up the 0845 603 2451 number to get appointment. I ring on 19 th nov & get interview date of 28th Nov.
The interview went smooth. Just general questions ,
--about my work
-- Where did I live till now in uk.
--About spouse info.

They ask me to wait for 3-6 weeks for getting the number. Also after 3 months I should be getting the card.

.. I was told by my one of the colleague that it will take lot of effort to get though this number as it remain engaged. So try ring only in the early morning hours. But may be I was lucky. I just ring up in afternoon time and get though the line in two rings.

simar.
