if you've been waiting for ages, applied within your previous visa, and still not got a reply, do the following:
1 - write to them via registered mail and ask them to confirm why the application is taking so long. Inform them you expect an answer within 14 calendar days.
2 - once the 2 weeks is up, and assuming you've either a poor response from them or no response at all, complain to them. They have a complaints procedure. Ask for a response within 14 days.
3 - assuming neither of the above have helped, get your local MP involved even if you or your partner is a British national and get him to write to the HO for an update. You should get a response with 2 weeks.
now assuming you do the above, and nothing happens positively (which I find really hard to believe), I would start court proceedings against the HO as this is stopping you from living a normal life, working etc. As soon as their lawyers get the court action, you'll have a prompt reply.
