As regards the matter of a TB test, the wife of a settled person, such as a ILR holder would be treated no different to the wife of a British Citizen.

Whether a TB test or required, or not, would depend upon in which country the spouse visa is being applied for.

TB Test for WIfe for ILR Holder

Post by pr200707 » Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:20 pm

Thanks John for your feedback. The application made in India and Doctor asked for Sputum test for TB which takes 6 weeks after which there will be another XRay (if sputum test is negative). What is next stage once sputum test is negative? I hope this process does not go on forever. Please advice.

Hopefully someone with experience of Indian-administered TB tests will reply to you.

hi pr2707,
why did the doctor asked your wife to do a sputum culture in the first place. well sometimes it is hard say with a chest xray whether a person has active TB or not , in case of doubt with the chest xray or the history they will ask you to do a culture either sputum or bronchial lavage or gastric fluid, which they grow for 49 day[newer methods grow in 10 to 15 days] if it is negative he can let he go , if it is positive probably he may ask for further test or trearment for 9 months

Thanks newiom for your response! Doctor asked for sputum test because there was a 1CM wide mark in chest which could have been because of pneumonia in child hood or pollution. Now the sputum test have come back NEGATIVE but doctor has called for another x-ray. Do you know y this second x-ray is required? And how long can it take now?

hi 20707,
yes , some scar in the chest can confuse the doctors whether it is active TB or something else, thats why they aked you to a sputum test. the repeat chest x ray is to see wheter there are any futher changes in the scar.if it is an active TB there wll besome changes if it is not an active TB or if it is a scar tissue then there wont be any changes ,in that case he can let you go.
is she symptomatic ?

Thanks newiom! No there are no symptoms at all. No cough, fever or anything. A very normal case. And now sputum is negative so hope it goes well.
Does this mean a negative sputum test does not guarantee negative TB? If scar has moved then does that mean we need to go through long medical prescription or is there any alternative or further tests?

Many Thanks

They're just being cautious. Scar tissue in the lungs always makes them look more closely. If it turns out that it is TB (although this sounds unlikely from what you've already said) and it is the treatable type (some strains of TB do not respond to treatment) they will put her on a course of medication and check again in six months. If all is clear after six months they will issue her with a certificate stating that she no longer has TB. If it is still present they will continue with treatment and check in another six months and so on.

hi pr207
A negative sputum test does not guarnatee a negative TB, but they have to take everything into consideration, clinical picture, sputum test , some places they may ask for more tests[ which is useless anyway] and the chest xray, but i think from what you say that they will let her go after the repeat chest x ray , basically you cant find much difference in the chest xray unless she has got an active TB. I think your case will be alright and she will get the visa once she has the repeat X RAY.

Thanks Newiom & Junai. We got the medical clearance from doctor. Thanks for your help. The report is now passed back to embassy.
Do you know how long it should take for stamping and is there any further hurdle to this process? Thanks again
