A friend of mine said that it is highly unsafe to work in SA. He was staying in a Hotel in the capital, when he had to go out, he needed a police man to escort him. You can search on internet about it and can have an idea.

I am not sure of the having police man escort all the time..

i had been to Jo'berg couple of times for work and the only advice's i was given time and again are:

1. Dont walk around alone be with a group
2. Do not go out in the evenings after 5-6pm (walking around) or early morning(jogging etc..)
3. Use Taxi's which the hotel provides you as they know with whom you left..

Many of my friends living there with families and their children going school they also mentioned/stressed the points 1-3..

I think it is a broad question depends on your position..

my friends are in Gold/ Platinum mines field; so I can not comment on it (package);
