Filing tax retuns before 31 Jan

Post by mubu » Mon Jan 25, 2010 1:50 pm

Hi,

Is this mandatory for everyone to file returns before 31 Jan?

I have never done this, though I was working a few months before april 2009.

What should I do?

Sorry but my post should have been more clear.

I am going in for HSMP extension - Tier 1 shortly, so asking this if this is mandatory for me?

Will they ask for this during extension process?

Filing a return is a tax matter, and not an immigration issue. Compliance with personal / business lax laws is independent of immigration category. If "spouse of a citizen" is self-employed, he/she too will have to abide with taxation laws .. just as a Tier 1(general) visa holder needs to! Get my point? Hence, your query is not in the appropriate forum .. irrespective of your immigration status!

Coming back to the point:
Ask yourself a simple question - Does the form ask you whether you've filed a tax return before the date specified by HMRC? Or Have you complied with tax laws or HMRC policies? I guess not!

As long as you're not in breach of immigration law, you should be fine. UKBA deals with immigration and not tax. So don't worry too much!

This is for tax year ending 5 april 2009, if you were not a self employed or ltd director and paid yourself a salary or received dividend before that date, then NO
