You don't know every single member's profession, so you cannot make such a sweeping statement as the one you did!

If you don't require a visa to travel to the UK, the worst the airline can do is make you buy a return ticket.
On arrival in the UK, you could be held up while they check the system to confirm that you do have a right of entry other than as a visitor. But if the card is likely to be available in the meantime, why not ask your friend to meet you with it on arrival, so that it can be produced if necessary? Make sure you have his mobile number to give to the IO. I would have thought that is better than entrusting it to overseas postal systems.
Of course, if you are a visa national you have no choice but to get it posted to you.
