Test for residence permit ?

Post by fpvt2 » Mon Jan 09, 2006 4:23 pm

I read that one can give a written test which is all about the UK history and culture, government structure, etc. , and if you pass it you get residence permit. Is there such a test exist, or is it a wrong information ?

Thank you very much.

You have to do an exam to apply for naturalisation as a British Citizen, but for that you have to satisfy the residence criterion as well.

Not sure if there is any other test for a residence permit?...

Did you mean that there is a test to get a British citizen, but you have to have an ILR before that, so you can not just be on a student visa for a few years and take the test ?

A student visa does not lead to ILR .... with one exception .... time legally in the UK on a student visa can count towards a 10-year or 14-year application. Apart from those types of application, the student visa does not assist in moving towards ILR.

British Citizenship? It is now the case that every applicant for Naturalisation has to supply either :-
  • a pass certificate from the Citizenship Test, or
  • a completion certificate from a combined ESOL/Citizenship course

Thanks.
So, to take the test you have to be in the UK on ILR, right ?

In theory, you can take the test whatever your status but to do that would be pointless as its purpose is to support naturalisation applications and you cannot apply for naturalisation unless you have ILR.

However you can take the test now and use it to support an application in the future when you do have ILR - if that is what you intend to do. Either way, the bottom line is the test has to be taken only if you intend to naturalise and ILR is a requirement for that.
