New Rules----English language

Post by AW » Tue Feb 09, 2010 3:04 am

According to a new rule, applicant must have near-GCSE level english.
can anybody advise me plz that, How much IELTS band is required to reach to near-GCSE level?

I did IELTS with 6.0
Speaking 7.0
Reading 5.0
Writing 5.5
Listening 6.0
Overall 6.0 Band Score

will I have to appear in that GCSE level test if I go for Master program?
plz advise

You probably will have interview when you apply for student visa wherein you will have to speak to the ECO. If you can speak/understand english good enough on this interview, you wouldn't need any certificate.

As you long as you can converse, I don't think any certificate is needed.

I guess this means that applicants might be required to pass the Academic format of the IELTS exam.
IELTS - Academic Format wrote:The Academic format is for those who want to study or train in an English-speaking university or Institutions of Higher and Further Education. Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses is based on the results of the Academic test.

If IELTS will be accepted then TOEFL can also be accepted. I am also highly confused as I don't know how will they bench mark someone's English language capability. I have given TOEFL test and scored 103/120 (Reading - 28/30, Listening - 28/30, Speaking - 23/30, Writing - 24/30). Do any one have an idea how will they test someone's English language ability? Universities mostly use TOEFL and IELTS for this purpose.

It was also announced that the policy guidance would be changed on 3 March 2010 to require English language students to already have attained roughly GCSE level (B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference) in order to come and study, although overseas Government sponsored students and ‘crammer course’ students studying English before commencing degree level study are exempted from this.

All other international students will have a CEFR C1 equivalent English language requirement imposed on them from summer 2010, which will be a major change.
See IELTS and the Cambridge ESOL examinations in a European context.

Exact details will be known when the new policy guidance will be made available by UKBA (only few more days to go).

At present it will be anything above IELTS 4.0 or CEFR B1
