Applying Out of country
If you are applying out of country and have a valid tier 1 visa already then you can apply for WP and when entering the UK, you will have to inform the immigration officer on which visa you are going to enter. If you are entering UK on WP then you will have abide by the rules of WP. At that stage I think your Tier 1 is still valid. Under ECB 10.5, one can have different visas for different categories. But, not sure whether Tier 1 and WP come under different categories or same category as both are employment visas. Adding to this, I have read somewhere in this forum that a member's Tier 1 was cancelled after issue of a transit visa (not sure why he needed a transit visa when he had a valid tier 1 visa).
Applying in-country
If you are already in the UK on tier 1 and you apply for WP then the grant of WP will invalidate your Tier 1.
