I think at the moment they are looking at Skilled Workers / Work Permits that area

Im sure that soon enough they will make the criteria much more stringent for spouses/settlements etc. As we know they are introducing the basic speaking requirement for the former this autumn

Does this also apply to spouses?
Technically no (human rights, rights to family etc...) but they will make it more difficult for spouses to settle here as time goes on.

Hi, can anybody tell wheter this english language criteria has been introduced or has just simply been announced but is yet to formally introduced as I plan to apply for my spouse's dependent visa.

It will be introduced in around autumn time. After your spouse comes to the UK and you apply for indefinite leave after 2 years, they will have to take the immigration test, which is just rediculous and the english test.

99% of people in the UK cant answer the immigration test.

If the July 2011 change in immigration rules remains then this will not be possible anymore.
