Was denied a US F1 visa in 2003, what reference number ?

Post by applyt1 » Mon Jul 05, 2010 6:21 pm

Need some clarification on filling the application form.
On the VAF9, Personal Details form there is a section -
Part 6
6.3 Have you ever been refused a visa for any country including the UK ?
# Date
# Country
# Reason
# Reference Number

I was denied a US F-1 Student Visa on 24 Jun 2003
My passport has the stamp - " US Consulate General Chennai 24 Jun 2003 Application received "

Apart from these, I don't have any other information about the Reference Number or the Reason.

Can I just enter Date, Country and leave the other fields blank ? Are these fields mandatory only for UK visa refusal ?
Or do you suggest anything else for filling these fields.

I am planning to submit my application this week.

Please suggest.

HEllo friend i was in a similiar situation. Best thing you can do is.
1. Get email details/contact numbers of US consulate in chennai. Explain them , you are applying for UK visa and i had to give reason for my US visa rejection. Provide them details like Your passport number, your name, Date of application for US visa, Date of rejection. Location of application. Etc.

2. You can also ask them for duplicate copy of rejection letter. Did they give you any rejection letter back in 2003, when u had applied for student visa? if so, it contains, reference number.

3. Yes you ought to mention your previous visa rejection info, in your application. Dnt ignore it.
Hope that helps.

It is hard to believe that, they haven't told you refusal reason. Be honest while entering information, that's what I can say.

Its not important..Not every country's visa rejection has a reference no.

Put in either NA or leave it black...its not a big issue..

To the best of my knowledge and experiance, you should be fine if you mention date/country/reason.. if you dont have reference number, should not matter as long as you declare it..

Thanks for all the replies.

I was just searching the web. Most of the F-1 Student rejections are either because of 214(b) - potential immigrant or 221(g) - insufficient documents. And most of the cases, they dont mention it clearly why they are rejecting. They just check one of these and reject your application. And as it is more than 7 years now, I do not remember if they have given me any letter with these details.

And my passport has got just the application received stamp with date.
I definitely do not have the reference number.

I have sent a mail to the US Consulate asking them for providing any information, but there is no reply yet.

Hoping that the US consulate would provide me some information.

Not sure what to do.

Date : dd mon yyyy
Country : USA
Reason : F-1 Student Visa. Do not know/remember the reason
Reference : Do not have / NA

This is the best I can think of at the moment.

And I have rescheduled my appointment till next week for this reason.

Got a reply fro the consulate specifying the reason for US Visa refusal. And there is no reference number for US Visa.

I'll provide the reason and mention the reference as N/A.
Will also attach a printout of the mail from the US consulate.

Thanks for your time.
