Work Permit & ILR

Post by Sher » Wed Apr 05, 2006 6:10 am

I gather one can go in for "Indefinite Leave to Remain", post 5 years on a work permit.

Does that mean one can therafter work for any company whatsoever ?

Is this like the US Green Card ?
[ Once u get it, u have "permanent residency", you can "work for anyone" and virtually "own any asset" ]

Yes it does - you can quit your job and go on the dole if you want, but this is not recommended :P

The "dole" is, as I understand it, a slang word meaning unemployment benefit. However the UK no longer has unemployment benefit! Instead it has Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), the terms for which are much tougher than for the previous unemployment benefit.

Merely quitting your job ... voluntarily giving up work ... gives a person no right to claim anything. And if there have lost your job then you will certainly need to be seeking another to get any benefit.

I agree John - but income support still exists and isn't dependent on looking for employment. In the past there was just unemployment benefit/income support as you said; now there's income support, job seeker's allowance and incapacity benefit if the person cannot work as a result of illhealth. "The dole" refers to the former 2.

The criteria for income support is quite stringent nowadays but many people still qualify for it.
