Post by pg5 » Thu Sep 16, 2010 4:26 am

Hi guys,
Just need to know that when I am applying for Nationalization, do I need to send my passport as I heard that I dont need to send the passport. If this is the case, can I travel on that passport.I am a Pakistani National so Iam allowed to have dual nationality. Till when I can use my Pakistani Passport as I have ILR Stamp on it.

At this stage you could easily find out by now that when using NCS you can retain your passport. Except you want to go through DIY, then you need to send your passport along with your completed form AN to the home office. Call your nearest NCS centre to get your appointment.

HI Newbies,
Thanks for kind help but I am bit lost. I am not very good at abbreviations, can you please explain what is NCS (I think it is Nationality checking service) but what is DIY route. Do you mean if I am sending Via Nationality checking service, they will give my passport back otherwise if I will send myself, I have to give my passport with AN form. Am I right?
My other question was about how long I will able to use my old passport . Till I will get the British one?

Yes, NCS means National Checking Service. DIY: means Do It Yourself. If you are submitting your application through NCS it will cost you anywhere between £40-£50, they will take photocopies of your original supporting documents including your passport and give you your original documents including your passport too. You can continue to use your passport until your application for British citizenship is granted by UKBA and you have attended citizen ceremony after that you can apply for British passport.

If you do not want to pay NCS, then you have to send your application including your passport via Royal mail recorded delivery to UKBA they will return it back to you after checking. I hope this helps. Please visit UKBA website for more information: http://ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/britishcitizenship/

Keep in mind that you must be physically present in the UK on the day when your application arrives at the Home Office. For this reason, it is recommended that you schedule your Nationality Checking Service appointment such that you will in the UK for at least five days after your NCS appointment.

Aside from the need to be in the UK when your application reaches the Home Office, you are free to travel whilst your application is pending.

You are free under UK law to continue using your Pakistani passport before and after naturalisation, as the UK has no problem with holding dual citizenship and travelling on a foreign passport.

As a practical matter, you will want to have a British passport for travel, as a British passport allows for faster entry to the UK and other European countries. When you apply for your first British passport after your naturalisation is complete, you will need to send your Pakistani passport with the passport application. For the purposes of planning any travel, take into account the fact that the Passport Service will have your Pakistani passport and UK naturalisation certificate in its possession for a few weeks when you apply for a British passport sometime in the future. (It is also advisable to get certified photocopies made of your passport and naturalisation certificate in case you end up needing them for employment or some other purpose.)
