Working FT whilst waiting for your psw

Hello all
I have recently graduated and after months I have finally managed to secure a place at a company. However since my student visa was to run our on 18th October, I have sent off my documents to HO in order to get a pws.

Does anyone know what the rules are about working while waiting to see whether you'll get a visa or not?
I know I am stupid and I should have applied in person so to get a much quicker reply, but I wasnt thinking clearly at that moment and now it's too late for that?

I was meant to start my job tomorrow (Monday the 11th OCT) but now they want to delay my start date.

Any information regarding this, will be hight appreciated.
