No Acknowledgement Letter Received

Hello

I posted my application on the 4th Oct, paid by cheque and money was deducted from my account on the 8th. However I haven't received an acknowledgement letter yet. I tried calling HO but they are not helpful at all.
I was meant to start working on a new job on the 8th Oct. According to HO webpages you can work full-time while awaiting a decision on your PSW, but obviously I need to somehow prove to my employer that I have actually applied and I have nothing without the letter.
I am very worried that I might lose this job because they have been waiting for two weeks already and I'm not sure how patient they would be with this.
I really don't know what to do anymore. Any advice???
