Can child remain PR even if parents not in Canada?

Post by canadahopeful » Thu Nov 04, 2010 5:47 am

Hello! Thanks for the great advice offered on this site!

We landed in July 2008 as a family and my son is now in college in USA. He wants to do his MS in Canada starting next year as we have PR status. I am the PA but we (wife and I) cannot be in Canada and may have to give up the PR status.

Can my son go ahead on this PR and is he eligible for Canadian citizenship after 3 years stay in Canada?

Appreciate your urgent advice on this! Cheers!

Once a person has received a PR, they are independent of what the other family members (who were on the initial application) do, so yes, your son can remain in Canada and can apply for citizenship, assuming he completes all the necessary requirements.

Ironically he could then sponsor you for PR (in the far future) if you loose your PR status.
