Tier 1 extension and salary band

Post by sudhakar_barua » Thu Nov 18, 2010 7:08 pm

Hi, My tier-1 will go for extension in 2012 at which point my salary should be in the £50-55k band which I currently not at. If i get a job in that salary band just at the time of application will it do, or I need to show proof of being in that band for a certain period of time?

They look at past 12 months

Exactly - they don't look at your salary band, they look at your actual earnings for the last 12 months.
You may claim for a period of less than 12 months, but these earnings will not be considered on a pro rata basis.

salary band for Tier 1 extension

Post by sudhakar_barua » Mon Nov 22, 2010 12:40 pm

Since I have applied for Tier 1 after April 2010, now during extension in 2012, I will have lesser points if I continue in my current salary band. Salaries above 50-55k are not so common, and employers anyhow do not pay so much if they see that my Tier 1 is valid only for 2 yrs.
Do we foresee that this salary bands will be made lenient in the future or in a better economic climate?

I highly doubt it will get more lenient in the future, quite the opposite. But based on the fact that you are extending the rules should remain the same as the rules you came in on.

To be honest when I applied initially and got Tier 1. I only took a job with a salary that would get me enough points for extension. Seems pointless to get Tier 1 and then not have enough points for extension because you took a lower paying job that what you scored points on initially.

I got a job offer before I went to the UK, which made life a lot easier and less stressful.

I showed 6 months of Indian salary and 6 months UK salary which met the objective of being in the correct band for initial Tier2 to Tier1 switch. Now, for extension I would not be showing an Indian salary. So, I believe my task now should be to get a high paying job as soon as possible.

That is correct, or look for a second job.

I believe you are in a permanent position... try contracting if you want to take the risk...open a ltd company and let the profit stay in the company, at the time of extension pay yourself good income(hopefully by then you have enough savings)

or, what if I to get an MBA meanwhile before applying for Tier 1 extension in 2012? Is a MBA by correspondence(open university) recognised by UKBA?

Of course it is. There are also other UK universities that do part time and distance masters degrees.

It depends on factors like age, qualification etc. other than your salary band. Try the points based calculator at http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/pointscalculator
