Tier 4 Dependant Uk visa application pending for 5 months

Thanks for your time and effort to shed some lights into Uk Visa related issues

I have submitted an application as a tier 4 dependant for over five months now and till date i have not recieved any information on it. In this case what do i do? If I contact the UkBA on the status would this approach have any negative effect on the decision? Looking forward to hearing from you.
