In my opinion, cover letters are not much use unless you have some exceptional circumstances you need to explain.

I have applied for 6-10 entry clearances, residence permits and extensions (for self and wife) over the last few years and never once have I submitted a cover letter.

As long as you include necessary evidence and answer everything in the form, that should be enough.

People in favour of including a cover letter may disagree, but this is my opinion Peace.

right.. but people wont listen to that. They still will follow the same rules as others did. As a matter of fact, i have to accept that i too did the same !!!!
