From New Zealand to the UK :)

Post by Mr5050 » Thu Feb 10, 2011 2:58 pm

Hi all,
I'm Danny and I'm new here and I have absolutely no idea about this kind of thing or how to get the ball rolling.

I have a steady girlfriend who lives in New Zealand and we want her to come to the UK to live. She'll be wanting to work and have British nationality status. We are planning on getting married soon and I would be in great debt if someone could give me the low down or point me in the right direction.

Has anyone come over from N.Z. to the UK and if so how difficult will it be?

Yours, Clueless,
Danny :)

Assuming you are a British citizen:

Option:
1. Get married outside UK (e.g. - NZ).
2. Apply for settlement visa as spouse of British citizen.
3. Travel to UK - no restriction on work / employment / self-employment.
4. Apply for settlement as and when eligible.
5. Apply for naturalisation as and when eligible.

Thanks mate :) Yes I'm born and bred English. What if I didn't have the option to marry abroad? Would it be harder?

Not necessarily!

She may apply for entry clearance as fiancee of a British citizen. You'll need to get married in the UK before the visa expires and, after marriage, apply for leave to remain (from within UK) as spouse of British citizen.

Keep in mind that, with the fiancee visa, she cannot work until you have converted it to a spouse visa (which can only be done after marriage).

Also keep in mind the costs.

Fiancee visa - £750
Spouse visa extension - £500 (postal)/£800 (in person).

Compared to a spouse visa if you marry abroad - £750 + airfare there/back.

But if you don't want to be rushed into getting married - maybe she could qualify for the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme - if she is over 17 and under 31 years old http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/worki ... ityscheme/

Oh and if she is a NZ passport holder or one of the other nationalities that YMS applies to
