taxable income

Post by petedigital » Sat Jun 24, 2006 12:25 pm

Hi all,

I get paid a base salary, just under 27 000. I also get paid an accomodation allowance. With the accomodation allowance I get over 27 000 and therefore qualify for the past earnings points. Both my base salary and accomodation are listed on my pay slips. I DO pay tax on my base salary, I DO NOT pay tax on my accomodation allowance.

Can I claim my accomodation allowance as part of my gross income?

A few people have told me you can only claim what you get taxed on.

The guidance documentation states that:
"We will not be able to consider any allowances paid to you that are not declared on your pay slips."

So, I would assume that I can claim my accomodation allowance.

This is important for me as I will not qualify unless I can count my allowance.

By the way, I'm applying in the under 28 category, I've been working in the UK on a working holiday visa.

Cheers all :)

oh and I assuming I can claim my accomodation I plan to submit as evidence:

- 12 months of pay slips
- bank statements that correlate with the pay slips
- a reference letter from my employers that backs up my pay slips

I will NOT be submiting a P60 or a tax return. Will that be ok?

I called the Work Permits Home Office department (01142074074) and asked them my question. They were unsure so they called the HSMP office on my behalf.

They said that allowance on my payslip CAN be included in my gross income, even if they're not taxed.

WOOOOHOOOO, one hurdle down... many more to go ;)

if anyone has any further information or experience with this i'd love to hear about it

Thanks fr you reply

I am an indian i meant that i get Rs 3 lakhs per annum as salary by my regular employee and 1.5 lakhs hroughmy freelancing so can i gain points on earning by combining these because it says that if you earn 4 lakhs per annum in india and if your under 28 then you are eligible for 25 points.

Thanks in advance.

Coolraju,
You can combine the earnings.
Simply supply evidence in support of each of the earnings individually and show tax returns in support of both.
