Duration of stay

Post by Bearuk » Thu Apr 14, 2011 9:12 am

Hi there

I just got Schengen visa from French Consulate with C type, MULTIPLE, valid from 1/5/11 - 25/5/11 with DURATION OF STAY : 11 DAYS

My Question is Can i Travel to Schengen Area from 1/5 to 5/5 then come back to UK, then Travel from 8/5 to 15/5 ( 15/5 leaving Schengenvisa Countries to come back UK) ?

Does that still satisfy the 11 DURATION OF STAY in TOTAL ?

Simple mathematics and the dates as given tell me that you plan to stay 13 days in Schengen but your visa obviously doesn't allow that.

1,2,3,4,5 = 5 days

8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15 = 8 days

5+8 = 13 days total

Any day counts per calendar day, not per 24 hour interval.

This is a typical issuing mistake due to the absurd practice by some (Schengen-)states to issue a visa for the EXACT days you plan to stay.

Whenever the consular official does his maths wrong, you end up with a worthless visa.

I personally had the same experience in Iran: I wanted to stay from Thursday to Thursday (=8 days), but the Iranian official in Dublin issued 7 days. Ironically I even asked about that, and he said "that´s OK"... Well, it wasn´t.

The US, Canada, Australia, but even China and India are easier: I just applied for a Chinese multi-entry, and filled "maximum days spent consecutively in China" as "7" (seven). They just gave me 30 (thirty) PER STAY without any further hassle.

The Schengen-system sounds great in theory, the practical management is worse than third-world...

Thank you all very much, indeed.

That's not the Consulate fault, just my fault. I just bought the Insurance from 1/5 to 11/5, so that they just gave me 11 days of tour.

Thanks again for your fast and very useful answers.

But your visa stays valid until 25/5/11. From 12/5 you will have no cover anymore with your current policy. It would have made sense to restrict the visa to 11/5 but not beyond.

Your travel insurance needs to cover you for the full period. Border police can ask you for all relevant proof.
