Any advice on lettings?

Post by iskander » Wed Jul 12, 2006 1:17 pm

Hi
I got my WP now, and I have to start in 10 days. Any tips for a quick flat rental arrangement?
I heard something that you might need a reference? is that so?
Any advice is welcome. Thanks

Not easy mate.

To be honest unless you can find sth empty you'd have to wait. Refences are taken for sure, at least in my experience.

Maybe try a bedsit or small guesthouse until you get sth sorted? Plus you don't want rush and end up in a tortuous lease in a place you hate....

Don't forget u'll need a bond of usuallly one months rent plus a month upfront...

A flat share is often less formal and lease-free for newcomers (ie someone else there already signed the lease with the agency). You could do that for a while until you get your bearings.

"Something" - I think Wanderer has a problem distinguishing between a mobile phone and a computer keyboard....

Actually it from when I was courting my now partner on ICQ! She's Russian and they do like to abbreviate everyhing possibly because of their crappy internet.

sth = something

sb = somebody

There's others and I've no idea if they are related to SMSing or not!

fair enough.
so, bottom line is that I have little chance to find a reasonable rental for a relative short term given the circumstances and the short notice, right?
With or without this, should I obtain a reference from an ex-colleague that is a company director now? (well, his company, with one employee, but still...)

I think you should get all the references you can - and I think tekaweni's suggestion is the best so far - look for a flat or house-share, to get you started...

Good luck!

I had a tough time finding a flat when I came to UK around 3 months back. It was an agonizing 3 weeks before I could find a flat to move in. But this could very well be since I am not in any major city in the UK.

As far as reference is concerned a simple signed letter from your employer on company letterhead would do. But then various letting agencies have their own rules
