The change in no way stops an employer from applying for a work permit for someone who already holds a work permit for a similar position.

I don't agree with that. For two reasons. Firstly if the nurse is, let's say, a Band 5 nurse, the fact that they have got a WP when that was a shortage occupation is irrelevant as regards applying for a WP when it is not a shortage occupation.

Secondly NHS Trusts have not exactly got funds to use on doubtful WP applications. They will do all they can to reduce WP application costs are far as they can.

True, but the fact that they have got a work permit (for a similar position) allows the application to be made under tier 2. There would be no need to satisfy the 'resident labour' test.

Work permit applications for a change of employment aren't exactly doubtful IMO, the applications are almost a rubber stamping exercise. Is the worker qualified - Yes. Is it a skilled position - Yes. Resident labour test doesn't apply. And if they can't afford ?153, well, the NHS is really in a bad way.

Make no mistake though, the British government is exploiting foreign labour.

Woodie G,
I Agree to this comment of yours. It is what they are trying to say by this new move on clamping Nurses. My wife is a Nurse and I can tell some facts here.

Overseas Nurses coming to UK must Undergo a Supervised Placement (now called Overseas Nurses Programme) which runs from 3 months to 9 months depending on the past work experience, country of experience and country from where the Nurse got her professional qualification. Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (nmc-uk.org) is the professional body that controls Nursing in UK + the ONP and License or what they PIN Number matters.

Currently there must be an average of over 25thousand Overseas Nurses undergoing this training as Student Nurses in UK. So what will they do if after qualifing they do not get a WP to continue their profession?

NMC WEBSITE HAS NO UPDATES AS OF TODAY TO THIS MATTER AND THEY ARE STILL ISSUING APPLICATIONS FOR OVERSESAS NURSES TO REGISTER WITH THEM. ( THEY ARE HAVING A GOOD BUSINESS AS EACH APPLICATION PACK COSTS £150, NURSES WHO PAY NOW FOR THIS WILL LOOSE THIER MONEY, THEN WHY DON'T NMC STOP IT????)

Why does not the WP/Home Office, NMC or the Goverment  keep as a secret what will happen to these ones??? :?:
