Penalty for LPR staying away too long?

Can someone please help me with this one?

What exactly happens to a LPR who stays out of the USA for over a year? Is there a penalty or do you basically start at the begining?

I heard of a case where someone was penalised for two years, but this is all hearsay and I don't even know the details.

If you stay out of the US for over a year and return can you appeal from within the US?

Read my previous postings on this forum covering in some detail the subject of abondoned residence and the burden of proof depending on how long you have bene away. If you have no joy ask again.
