Confusion about Visa Expiry during another application

Hello,

I'd like to find out how do the department handle the expiry of a Visa which happens when the applicant is awaiting the outcome of another process with the department.

Specifically my partners student visa expires soon, but we have not heard any news yet on our application for 'de facto' relationship status (which would give him stamp 4).

How should we proceed as we'd like to avoid any illegality?

My friend go to local GNIB office and explain the situation and ask for a temp card for this period
