report back to Embassy after Schengen Stay?

Post by ca.funke » Mon Jul 18, 2011 1:40 pm

Hello all,

a friend recently visited us, >>using this visa<<.

The Swiss Embassy that issued the visa asked the applicant to report back to the Embassy once back home.

They orally told him, when collecting the visa, that he must keep his boarding passes, and when back in the country to report back to the Embassy showing them all boardingpasses for both legs of the complete journey :!:
  • Is that part of an effort to establish whether he really left Schengenland?
  • I wonder what is the legal basis for demanding this?
  • Why did they ask him orally? (=no proof that this really happened)
  • What could be the consequences of not doing so?!
My mind is boggled. Thanks for any possible insight!

Rgds, Christian

I doubt there is any legal basis for that and your friend is not under the jurisdiction of Switzerland. So it can only have an effect if he plans to go there again. He could have trouble getting a visa again though it is not clear to me why they want him to report back now. Unusual indeed.

More embassies does the same

Post by eldane » Mon Jul 18, 2011 4:06 pm

The Danish embassy in Ukraine does the same and in fact I believe this is common practice for all DK embassies issuing visas to the Schengen area.

I seem to remember this is written into the visa instructions by the danish immigrations directorate in Copenhagen.

I also think to remember having seen those internal instructions on their web site some time ago.

Thanks,
Michael
Good intentions are appreciated but results are what matters..

The distinction is, if its visit EU family. then such procedures are over the top.

Recall
EU Petition against Ireland wrote: He complains that the Irish Embassy in London checks by telephone whether he and his
wife really are in the hotel they reserved and believes he does not have to give this
information to the embassy.
However if there is no EU family connection, then anything goes.
e.g. the Irish Consulate in Shanghai demand 10,000 euro deposit
from each person on approved tourist groups.
Great wee money spinner, am sure a decent gambler can make a
good profit within a month using other peoples money

Maybe it is part of Swiss "Visit Quality Switzerland" program.

As I understand it, they want to make sure that the trip went smoothly, that no airline employee hassled the traveler about their visa, that the hotels were clean, the Raclette was excellent, and that the traveler has no unresolved problems preventing them from visiting again next year. And they give you a box of chocolates and a voucher for a free visa!

The unresolved problem is the local currency:

Looking at my old dutch Schengen visas from over 15 years ago, there are hand written directives to report to the embassy by xx date upon return. Don't recall physically reporting though...

I would take a look at the embassy website, unless it is somewhere in writing, I think it is rubbish. If you do not find it in writing, you can always say that noone has told you, and they can't prove the opposite.
