Work Permit--bit of details to educate my employer & mys

Hello,
I'm on dependent visa in Uk since 2 years(My spouse is working on work permit since 2 years. Both are in IT. ) I got a job and am working since one year. My employer was reluctant to get the work permit done for me and after one year of proving my worth I think he will be willing to sponsor me(if not financially-- i'll bear the cost of applying) but I need to educate him about the nitty gritty of what it takes to apply.
So could you please help me with the details of what is required to apply for a work permit. My employer thinks its too much of a hassle.
Your help would be truly appreciated.
