Renewing SA passport

I really need to go and renew my passport in London very soon as I am planning a holiday for December this year. I tried to do this by mail but could not get the fingerprints done locally. I have 2 very small kids and dread going to London and the south african house with them.

I have dual nationality with Italian and my husband and kids are all on on UK passports and I was wondering if I could travel to south africa on my EU passport with a return ticket. Its just a pain in the *** to get to central London with 2 kids!

Any help will be appreciated!

My understanding is that you cannot legally use your Italian passport to enter or leave SA if you are South African.
