Start date: your joining date with the employer as a Tier 2 migrant.

Assuming leave to remain (in-country) application:
End date: depends on how long the employer wishes to sponsor you for. For a date more than 3 years in the future, the leave to remain can only be granted for max. of 3 years (subject to conditions - 245HE) ... and the employer will need to issue another CoS then for you to extend your stay.

Are you switching from PSW ?

Start date should be 19th Jan 2012 and End date should be 3 years from this.

Do not apply 3 months before your start date. (Someone got refused for doing that here in this forum)

Do your math bro :)

Thanks for your prompt reply. I am already working with my employer for more than 15 months, so in this case what should be the start date ?

2nd. Can i apply for the Tier 2 visa early (my current visa is going to expire in Jan 2012)

You have already (partly) answered your own question in one of the earlier posts - any date between now and 20-Jan-12 (can even be beyond that, but I am not keen to explain how - so ignore it).

It is your choice when you wish to switch from Tier 1 (PSW) to Tier 2. Pick a date of your choosing. Does "first working day of the new year" sound good?

Just make sure that the CoS is not applied for more than 3 months before the intended "start date".
