Are Payslips required if I am a contractor

Hi All,
I need to apply for extension and I am wondering are payslips are manadatory??
My Accountant is saying its nto required as my salary is prepared on an annual basis and therefore no payslips are prepared but I can confirm that your salary for 2011/12 is £XXX This will be confirmed whith HMRC in May 2012 on completion of your 2011/12 P35 and P60.

Please advise?

If you have already read the section of the guidance that refers to contractors can you please say what part of that you still don't understand?
