The BRP will replace the wide range of documents UK employers currently used to check an individual's right to work in the UK. Non-EU citizens who are currently in the UK and applying to stay for longer than six months are issued with a biometric pass consisting of fingerprint, photographic and identity data held on a secure chip. Immigration Minister Green announced that from 29 February 2012 BRPs will also be issued to refugees and those granted permission to settle in the UK.

I'm assuming that your husband is a sole trader here (so not a company director and that the letters don't relate to a company)....

With income being earned during the 2010-11 tax year, ordinarily he would be completing a tax return for the 2010-11 year that must be filed with HMRC online by 30th January 2012 and paid then too (with potentially a second payment on account in July 2012).

The 30th October date comes in with paper tax returns - I'd be surprised if your husband wouldn't need to do a tax return until next year.

However I don't have all of the information at hand and HMRC have more of a say than I do so potentially the best thing to do is for your husband to call them - the number to call is on the 'contact us' page on HMRC's website.

Did he tell HMRC about the self-employment? Indeed did he tell them within 3 months of the start of the self-employment, as required by tax law?

If he did tell HMRC, has he received a notice requiring him to file a Self Assessment tax return? If so when was that received?

If he did tell HMRC about the self-employment and has not received a notice requiring the filing of a Self assessment tax return, that would be unusual, and I think he should phone HMRC and ask whether they have indeed issued such a notice.

I think he should phone HMRC and check whether they have issued a notice requiring him to file a Self Assessment return for the year to 05.04.11.

Or if he has already registered to file his return online, he should log in and see what that says. There he will be able to read :-
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) sent you a notice to complete a tax return on 06 Apr 2011 but have not yet received it.
-: or not, as the case may be.
