Can UKBA keep the passport in same-day service ?

if the caseworker decides that he need to make extra checks, can he keep the passport ?
if yes, what happens if I need my passport in the next week or two?

if you search for people's peo experiences in this forum, you will find that the case worker can treat your application as a postal one if it is not straightforward or if s/he needs to run verification checks. so your passport stays with them.

if you ask for your passport back your application will be considered withdrawn, no refund of fees, no visa.
