PIO card and school/college studies in India

Post by curious2006 » Mon Oct 16, 2006 6:03 pm

All,

This is a query for those who have insights/practical knowledge in this area.

Can a minor (5 year old) with British passport (with parents being Indian citizens) get a PIO card (i.e. Person of Indian Origin card)?. If the parents then relocate to India, can the minor then study in India in schools and colleges on the basis of the PIO card without the need for any other visa?

Can the child after college study work in India on the basis of the PIO card (without the need for a work permit)? I know that the PIO card is to be renewed/reapplied every 15 years.

This is based on the understanding that a minor cannot apply for OCI as per current rules.

Thanks

PIO Card holders can stay in india only for 6 months. After that if they wish to stay they need to register with police etc etc

So the best option for you is one of the parent should become british and then obtain OCI for the parent and the child.

The rules for OCI have recently changed that one of the parent of a minor child should hold british citizenship (stupid rule)
