expire passport

i applied for the visa in Sep 2011, my passport is expired on 28 March 2012,
If the going to give me the Visa, do i need to renew the passport before getting the visa,

What visa is this and why has it taken about 6 months for you to get the visa have you contacted UKBA, they should grant the visa and you will need to travel with old and new passport
