English Language Test - Spouse Visa applicant

Post by mmaddyyyy » Wed Apr 11, 2012 9:16 pm

Hi everyone,

I would like to explain my visa situation and welcome any valuable inputs from you guys in regards to this.

I am going to be eligible for ILR in August 2012. I got married and my wife travelled to UK in November 2010 and she travelled back to India for delivery at the end of November 2011. She is due to return back to UK in June 2012 along with my baby girl. My baby girl can apply for ILR along with myself.

In the current scenario, as my wife hadn't lived in UK for 2 years, hence she cannot apply for ILR along with myself in August 2012 and instead should apply for "Spouse Visa".

Also, there is a requirement that my wife needs to prove the english language proficiency. She needs to write IELTS and I am not sure what is the grade/points she need to score. Can anyone who have taken the test for similar purposes let me know what is the procedure involved and where can we write this test? I was also told that degree being taught in English wouldn't solve the purpose.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Regards
Aneil

You spouse needs to have A1 level only. For IELTS

Level B1 Corresponds to ---> which should be OK for FLR(M)

Listening – 4.0
Speaking – 4.0
Reading – 4.0
Writing – 4.0

Level B2 Corresponds to ---> which should be OK For FLR(M)

Listening – 5.5
Speaking – 5.5
Reading – 5.5
Writing – 5.5

Level C1 Corresponds to ---> which should be OK for FLR(M)

Listening – 7.0
Speaking – 7.0
Reading – 7.0
Writing – 7.0

Level C2 Corresponds to ---> which should be OK for FLR(M)

Listening – 8.5
Speaking – 8.5
Reading – 8.5
Writing – 8.5

I hope this is clear. For more info please have a look at

KET (KEY ENGLISH TEST) is cheap and easy.......they only accept degrees from certain unis..there is a list somewhere in ukba website.....don't take a risk....... KET is the cheapest and easiest option..........

Hey guys,
I used to think you needed 4.5 overall, My wife has done the test twice:

Test 1
writing 3.5
reading 2
listening 4
speaking 4.5

Test 2
writing 4.0
reading 1.0
listening 3.0
speaking 4.0

Should i show both tests or just one.
According to the post above i should be OK right?
please advise on how i should apply, with both or just first

No she needs to have a 4.0 in each of speaking and listening. The IELTS test is not designed to test at A1 level. Your wife should try an easier test (a score of 3.0 is A1 but the UKBA won't accept this as they only accept scores of 4.0 and above due to the fact that IELTS is not designed to test at below level B1

TEST 1 is acceptable......neeed minimum of 4 points.....(reading/writting is not considered)
listening 4
speaking 4.5
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitec ... -tests.pdf

SET 17.5.1 Does the applicant need to pass the test overall?

No the applicant only needs to pass the speaking and listening elements at the A1 level they do not need to pass the reading and writing parts.
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/polic ... set/set17/

Test 2 is NOT acceptable
listening 3.0 (below 4)
speaking 4.0
...........if test 1 hasn't expired yet ( ielts has a life span of 2 years only)...u can use it.......

There is a good resource in Sheffield. The staff are very helpful and friendly at Learn for Life Enterprise based in Sheffield, http://www.learnforlifeenterprise.co.uk . This is the official A1 and B1 speaking and listening test centre in Yorkshire for Trinity College London at Sheffield. This is a Home Office/ UK Border Agency approved, Secure English Language Test (SELT). You need the Speaking & Listening exams at B1 entry 3 level when you are applying for UK Citizenship. This GESE grade 5 Speaking & Listening exam consists of a ten minute one-to-one interview.

If you are applying for a Spouse / Partner Visa you will need Speaking & Listening A1 / ESOL Entry 1. This is a six minute one-to-one interview. This is suitable for Spouse and Partner Visas on FLR (M) and suitable for Parents of Dependents FLR (O). You can also find information about the SELT A1 and B1 English test centre Sheffield and lots of other useful information, exam tips and advice at http://www.examcentres.co.uk on matters regarding applying for British citizenship, ILR and spouse visa applications.

Learn for Life Enterprise in Sheffield also offer ESOL courses, exam preparation sessions for the A1 and B1 language test as well as courses to prepare for the Life in the UK test.
