Passport while naturalisation application

Hi,

Wondering if it is necessary to send the passport along with the naturalisation application or is there a way to retain passports.

Also is it necessary to be present in the country while the naturalisation application is being processed?

I may need to travel at short notice however want to proceed with the application as well.
