Changing jobs on work permit

Post by doc123 » Wed Dec 13, 2006 10:43 pm

This is for a friend of mine. He was here on a working holiday visa. He got a job with a multinational corporation, who arranged for him to get a work permit. He was on the work permit for 6 months. Unfortuantely, the company underwent restructuring and he lost his job due to retrenchment. His wife is expecting now. What are his options?

He is looking for another job now. I suppose he cannot continue on the same work permit. what should he do? Does he need to inform the home office about losing his job? Will he have to leave the country immediately?

Grateful for any advise. Thanks

your friend has (28) days from his firing/reducndency to leave the country.

alternatively, he may be eligable for HSMP visa?

He has 28 days to look for a new employment, if he is not able to find employment within those 28 days then any other vacancy he finds after this time period will be subject to the usual requirements for a work permit application, eg: advertising the job and all the other red tape. If he is lucky to find employment in those 28 days then the vacancy is not subject to being advertised in the local press or as in the previous post he could possible apply for an HSMP.

The clock only starts once the old employer informs the HO that he has been made redundant, or they might back date it to the day they actually asked him to leave. My advice to your friend would be not to sit on his rear end and start looking for and acquiring a new job it will be tough but he will have a glimmer of hope as he has been granted a WP before.

All the best
